Advent & Christmas 2016

“Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.”
Luke 2:15

The Context of Advent…

Every day we face the choice between hope or despair.  We face the sometimes-harsh realities of our world and it is hard to forge ahead.  We are forced also to ask, “what are we to do?”  “How are we to respond.”  Advent invites us to face these questions and struggles with God.  The story of Jesus’ birth is not one of God avoiding these realities, but of God existing right in the midst of them.  It is as if through Jesus, God is saying, “I am not far away, but I am in your very self – in your very own body.  I am with you.”  In the sacred seasons of Advent and Christmas we face the mystery of this revelation, and seek to receive our Lord with an open heart.

Invitation

You are invited to join the band of pilgrims at St. Augustine’s as we gather to hear the news told and retold in Advent that God is with us.  Sunday mornings the community listens to the scriptures and commemorates Jesus’ last supper in the Eucharist.  We light Advent candles as we discern God’s light in the midst of darkness.  We share in simple, but practical ways, of serving the needs of our community (Bissell Center + Terra).  We sing the songs that bring us into the imagination of Christ’s nativity. A simple (but awesome!) Christmas drama will be presented on the fourth Sunday of Advent at the 10am.
